Make a Grayscale Image Transparent with GIMP

  1. Open the image.
  2. In the Layers Panel, click Add Alpha Channel.
  3. If there are multiple layers, merge them together
  4. Convert it to greyscale (Image -> Mode -> Grayscale)
  5. Select-All & Copy
  6. Left click the Layers Panel. Yes, click it.
  7. In the Layers Panel, right click Layers pane and click “Add Layer Mask”
  8. Select the White radio button, then click Add
  9. Paste your image
  10. Invert it (Colors-> Invert)
  11. Click the Floating Selection and select New From Visible.
  12. Delete the Floating Layer and background images.
  13. Save
